Admission requirements

Required coursework is 12 semester hours of biology or zoology; 16 chemistry, including eight general inorganic with qualitative analysis and laboratory and eight organic with laboratory; eight physics with appropriate laboratory; six mathematics; and at least 30 non-science hours. Six English hours and social science and humanities are strongly recommended within the non-science total. Biochemistry is strongly recommended. Applicants educated at a college or university that is not regionally accredited in the United States should complete at least 24 biomedical-science credits at an accredited U.S. institution and submit a course-by-course NACES evaluation. Completing the final predental year at a four-year institution is strongly recommended but not required. The current page accepts pass/fail and online coursework using COVID-era wording whose current scope is not dated; applicants should confirm any planned online prerequisite with Admissions before relying on it.

The DAT is required and must be taken within the last three years. UAB publishes no minimum. Applicants submit four letters through AADSAS: at least two, but no more than three, from instructors who taught a science course; one from a dentist shadowed; and one choice such as a committee, advisor, supervisor, sponsor or research professor.

UAB publishes no minimum shadowing-hour requirement. It values consistent exposure, primarily to general dentists, and says quality matters more than accumulating hours. Only U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are considered. Admissions

The $75 supplemental is sent to Alabama applicants and out-of-state applicants whose primary application merits serious consideration. Applicants should pay only after an invitation. UAB separately requires accepted students to make a $1,000 nonrefundable seat deposit, credited at registration.

The dated list unexpectedly includes “deposit” in the November 15 pre-offer line even though the deposit section applies only after admission. Do not treat November 15 as a universal pre-offer $1,000 payment deadline; the applicant's portal and offer instructions control the deposit. UAB does not publish Fall 2027 orientation/start dates or a dated interview season on these pages.

How selection works

UAB says it uses holistic evaluation. Academics and DAT performance are considered alongside letters, personal statement, interview, general-dentistry shadowing, community service, student involvement and other experiences. The school gives preference to bona fide Alabama residents but considers applicants from other states with superior academic records. How to apply FAQ

Applicants apply through AADSAS. Alabama residents and selected nonresidents receive the supplemental. Files indicating that the applicant may qualify are invited to interview with the Admissions Committee. Acceptances and rejections are communicated through AADSAS, with the first offers on December 15 and later offers possible as the class is completed.

The school does not publish numerical weights, DAT or GPA cutoffs, file-screen scoring, interview scoring, committee vote mechanics, an out-of-state quota or a wait-list order. The FAQ's approximately 30% nonresident class share is descriptive, not an eligibility promise.

Who this program may suit

UAB is Alabama's public dental school and gives Alabama residents admissions preference. The regular DMD is a four-year Birmingham programme. Applicants should connect general-dentist observation, sustained service and manual or interpersonal preparation to a concrete oral-health need, rather than relying on hours alone. DMD programme

Explain what the dentist could address, what depended on the wider system and what you learned about your role. Review whether you use a specific observation without overstating your responsibility.
