Admission requirements
Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents; the MD program does not admit international students. They must already hold a recognized baccalaureate degree or complete it in the year admission is sought. The degree must present at least 60 transferable units of course weight, and no specific prerequisite courses are required. Application requirements
The minimum cGPA is 3.30 for Alberta applicants and 3.50 for non-Alberta applicants on the University of Alberta 4.0 scale. The current calculation includes graded transferable coursework completed while full-time: at least 18 transferable units from September through April or 12 units during Spring and Summer. For applicants with four or more full-time academic years, the school may exclude the lowest eligible year if it is not the most recent. Application requirements
The MCAT is an eligibility threshold rather than a competitive score once minimums are met. Alberta applicants need at least 124 in each of the four sections. Non-Alberta applicants need at least 128 in CARS and 124 in each other section, all from one sitting. Scores must be released and verified in Launchpad by the deadline. The current official page says the last accepted MCAT testing date is tentatively August 29, 2026; tests before October 2, 2021 are not valid for this cycle. Application requirements Important dates
Applicants claiming Alberta residency must complete the new MD Program: Declaration of Alberta Residency Launchpad item by the application deadline. Use the University Calendar definition and the school's checklist rather than inferring status from a mailing address. Application requirements
Important dates
- July 1, 2026: Application opens for Fall 2027 admission.
- August 28, 2026: The live Fall 2027 Important Notices & Dates page lists this as the last accepted MCAT testing date. The Application Requirements page contains a conflicting tentative August 29, 2026 value; confirm the final date and score verification status in Launchpad before relying on either date.
- Early September 2026: Recommended timing for transcript requests and, where applicable, uploading proof of first- and second-term registration.
- October 2, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. MT: Application, required Launchpad items and forms, and transcript requirements are due. MCAT scores must be released and verified by this deadline.
- February 1, 2027: Graduate-degree documentation deadline for additional interview-ranking points, where applicable.
- By mid-February 2027: Interview invitations and regrets are expected in Launchpad.
- March 2027: Virtual interview event; exact dates are to be announced.
- April 15, 2027: Graduate-degree documentation deadline for additional admission-offer ranking points, where applicable.
- May 2027: Admission decisions are expected in Launchpad.
- June 15, 2027: Final transcripts and proof of degree completion are due for applicable admitted or waitlisted applicants; language checklist items are also due where applicable.
- August 2027: Mandatory orientation; the program typically starts in the last week of August.
These dates come from the current Important Notices & Dates page and the current Application Requirements page, which currently disagree by one day on the last MCAT date. Launchpad and cycle-specific applicant communications control if the school resolves the conflict.
How selection works
The school first checks whether an application is complete and meets its degree, cGPA, MCAT, citizenship, residency, transcript, and checklist requirements. The MCAT is used as a threshold: scores above the required minimum are not used competitively. Applicants with a completed master's or PhD may receive additional points toward the rank used for interview and admission offers when the required proof is submitted by the cycle deadlines. Application requirements
The non-academic file includes Personal Activities across employment; teamwork, collaboration, and leadership; volunteer work; life experiences and achievements; and mandatory Personal Highlights questions. Entries in the first four sections require verifiable details, and applicants provide two recommenders who answer standardized questions rather than submit open letters. Application requirements
Applicants selected for interview receive a virtual interview invitation through Launchpad. The public Fall 2027 material does not disclose the relative weights assigned to cGPA, Personal Activities, recommendations, graduate-degree points, or the interview; it also does not publish the post-interview ranking formula. Treat any unofficial weighting table as unconfirmed unless the school adds it to the current cycle materials. Application requirements Important dates
Interview details
Confirmed
The interview for the current application cycle will be virtual. Interview invitations and regrets are expected through UAlberta Launchpad by mid-February 2027, and the interview event is planned for March 2027 with exact dates still to be announced. The school says information included in the application may be discussed during the interview and directs invited applicants to their Candidate Information package for further instructions. Application requirements Important dates
Not published
The current Fall 2027 pages do not publish the interview platform, whether the event uses MMI stations, panels, asynchronous responses, or another format, the number of assessments, preparation or response timing, the questions, the assessment rubric, or the interview's weight in final ranking. Historical references to Kira Talent or a particular circuit should not be treated as the Fall 2027 format. Invitation-specific instructions and the Candidate Information package control.
Who this program may suit
The University of Alberta MD program may suit applicants drawn to generalist training, social accountability, collaborative care, and serving diverse populations across Alberta and northern communities. The program describes an adaptive curriculum that emphasizes generalism and prepares physicians for socially accountable care. This is an interpretation of the program's published mission, not a prediction of admission. MD Program
Applicants should also assess the location and community focus. The accredited MD program is offered in Edmonton and Grande Prairie. Its Northern Alberta Medical Program is designed to prepare graduates for primary-care needs in rural and Indigenous communities. Applicants interested in that focus should review the current site and pathway information directly, while applicants needing one specific city or a different curricular emphasis should compare those constraints before applying. Practice and next step
Start with A teammate's responsibilities change, a recommended interview-style practice prompt. Record a first three-minute response after a short planning period. Briefly frame the problem, identify the affected people and constraints, explain what you would clarify, choose a fair next action, and show how you would communicate it with empathy while preserving accountability. The school asks applicants to describe communication, collaboration, mentorship, and conflict-resolution work in its Teamwork, Collaboration, & Leadership section and notes that application content may be discussed in the interview. Application requirements
Then review the recording for one observable weakness: an unclear opening, a missing stakeholder, an unsupported assumption, an unexplained trade-off, or a vague next step. Use the recommended concise-response Path to make one adjustment, record the same answer again, and compare the two attempts. Keep the change only if the second response is easier to follow and still explains your judgment. Use the planning and response times here only for this exercise.
