Calgary MD Admissions (Fall 2027)

For Fall 2027 entry, the University of Calgary MD application closes October 1, 2026, and the current process combines a detailed file review with an in-person interview stage that includes MMI formats. The 2026-2027 Applicant Manual says the exact number and type of interview stations vary each year, so do not plan around an old circuit. Start with a recommended MMI-style response that tests clear judgment, empathy, and communication, then review one weakness and record it again.

Admission requirements

For Fall 2027 entry, applicants must be Canadian citizens, convention refugees, or permanent residents; individual international applicants are not eligible. Applicants need at least two full-time undergraduate years completed by the application deadline. A qualifying year normally includes at least 24 credits from September through April, with numerical or letter grades for at least 18 credits. Applicant Manual

Alberta applicants need a minimum calculated GPA of 3.20 and must have written the 2015-format MCAT; there is no minimum CARS cut-off for Alberta applicants. Non-Alberta applicants need a minimum GPA of 3.80 and a CARS score of at least 128. The school does not round up either GPA threshold. Applicant Manual

The last eligible MCAT sitting is August 28, 2026. Scores must be released to the University of Calgary through AAMC during the current cycle and before the application deadline; release is not automatic. The current manual lists the Indigenous Foundational Knowledge Requirement and otherwise says there are no prerequisite courses, although it recommends several undergraduate subjects. Applicant Manual

Alberta residency is based on the MD program's own definition, including 24 consecutive months of day-to-day physical presence in Alberta, NWT, Yukon, or Nunavut after age 15 and before the first day of classes, with specified alternatives for active-duty Canadian Armed Forces or RCMP members. Applicants uncertain about their status should ask MD Admissions for a determination rather than infer it from student-loan or postal-address rules. Applicant Manual

  • September 18, 2026: Last day the office says it will reply to application questions before the deadline.
  • October 1, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.: Online application, transcripts, WES assessments, references, required supporting documents, fee, and MCAT release are due. The manual uses both MST and MDT labels; confirm the time zone shown in UCAN.
  • Late January to early February 2027: MMI invitations are expected and UCAN scheduling opens.
  • February 27-28 and March 13-14, 2027: Tentative interview dates.
  • First two weeks of May 2027: Admission decisions are expected.

How selection works

Complete, eligible applications receive both objective and subjective file review. The pre-interview score assigns 20% to GPA, 10% to MCAT CARS, 10% to global academic merit, and 10% to intellectual curiosity, scholarship, and research. Five non-academic attributes are each worth 10%: communication; interpersonal skills and collaboration; maturity, insight, and resilience; commitment to communities and advocacy; and organizational, management, and leadership skills. Applicant Manual

Academic reviewers see the full file and assess academic merit and intellectual curiosity. General reviewers are blinded to GPA and MCAT scores and assess the five non-academic attributes using the applicant's experiences, employment, references, and other file information. The school standardizes component scores against that year's applicant pool. Applicant Manual

For interviewed applicants, the final score is 50% pre-interview score and 50% MMI score, after which aggregate scores are ranked. Applicants selected for the Southern Alberta Medical Program also undergo an additional panel interview. Applicant Manual

Interview details

Confirmed

For the 2026-2027 application cycle, interviews are expected to be in person and will likely run February 27-28 and March 13-14, 2027. The interview includes a variety of formats, including the Multiple Mini-Interview. Invited applicants schedule through UCAN. Applicant Manual

The school's current MMI guidance says it is more concerned with how applicants think than with choosing one supposedly correct position. It advises applicants to answer the scenario sincerely and explain what they would do, think, say, or feel rather than force a prepared speech into the station. Official MMI FAQ

Not published

The current manual does not publish the exact number of 2027 stations, the complete mix of station types, station and preparation timing, the questions, or a station-level scoring rubric. It explicitly says the number and type of stations vary from year to year. Older Calgary MMI pages may describe earlier circuits, but those details should not be treated as the Fall 2027 format. Invitation-specific instructions remain controlled by UCAN and the applicant's invitation.

Who this program may suit

The University of Calgary MD may suit applicants who want an accelerated, three-year program and are comfortable with a fast-paced, self-directed learning environment. Its RIME pre-clerkship curriculum uses longitudinal, case-based learning and emphasizes patient-centred clinical presentations, generalism, active learning, and professional identity development. This is an interpretation of the program's published structure, not a prediction of admission. Applicant Manual

Applicants should also assess the geographic commitment. Calgary-campus students are expected to spend 8-16 weeks of clinical training outside Calgary, and the Southern Alberta Medical Program trains students at the University of Lethbridge and in rural communities. Applicants seeking rural immersion can consider SAMP or the later UCLIC opportunity, while applicants who need a four-year calendar or exclusively city-based training should compare those constraints carefully. Applicant Manual

Practice and next step

Start with A teammate's responsibilities change, a recommended MMI-style practice prompt. Record one three-minute response after a short planning period. State your immediate approach, identify the people and constraints involved, name the information you would clarify, explain a fair next action, and show how you would communicate it with empathy while preserving accountability. This matches Calgary's published emphasis on judgment, communication, collaboration, integrity, empathy, and comfort with ambiguity without guessing the unpublished station format. Official MMI information

Then review the recording for one observable weakness: an unclear opening, a missing stakeholder, an unexplained trade-off, or a vague next step. Use the recommended concise-response Path to make one adjustment, record the same answer again, and compare the two attempts. Keep the change only if the second response is easier to follow and still explains your reasoning.
