Admission requirements

Applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree before matriculation at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university. Required courses are eight semester hours each of biological sciences with labs, general or inorganic chemistry with labs, organic chemistry with labs and general physics with labs; three semester hours of biochemistry; six of English composition; and six of college mathematics at college algebra or above. Each prerequisite needs a C or higher and must be complete by June 30 of the matriculation year. ECU prefers science prerequisites at a four-year institution; community-college work must be accepted for transfer by an accredited college or university. The DAT is required; ECU says scores older than three years may not be accepted and recommends testing no later than the fall before matriculation. ECU publishes no numerical DAT or GPA minimum. Applicants with a pre-professional committee must submit its letter. Where no committee exists, three evaluations are required: a science professor who taught the applicant, a community-service director or supervisor, and a non-relative current or retired North Carolina dentist. Enrollment is limited to North Carolina residents, who must complete the Residency Determination Service process. ECU does not offer advanced standing; an internationally trained dentist may apply only as a first-year applicant while meeting the same North Carolina residency, degree, prerequisite and DAT requirements.

ADEA AADSAS for the 2026-27 cycle opened May 12, 2026, accepted first submissions June 2, and closes February 5, 2027. ADEA AADSAS dates ECU says applicants may initiate the process in June, then sends supplemental instructions after receiving the processed AADSAS application. The current ECU pages do not publish a school-specific Fall 2027 primary or supplemental deadline, interview window, or exact matriculation date. Prerequisites must be complete by June 30, 2027. How selection works

ECU conducts holistic review of academic performance, particularly prerequisite and science courses; DAT and other available standardized-test results; service to underserved communities; the personal statement; faculty and dentist recommendations; knowledge of dentistry shown through shadowing, service and volunteering; the committee interview; and other pertinent information. The Admissions Committee meets periodically and uses the full available record to judge character and preparation. ECU does not publish numerical weighting, screening cutoffs, interview scoring, vote rules or alternate-pool ordering. The state-supported mission and North Carolina residency requirement are substantive eligibility and fit gates, not a separate campus pathway.
