FIU Herbert Wertheim MD Admissions Guide (2027)

For fall 2027 entry, FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine uses AMCAS, a secondary application, faculty recommendations, the MCAT and two virtual one-on-one interviews. Florida residents receive preference, but qualified out-of-state applicants are considered. The school publishes the current cycle sequence without printing a year beside every deadline, and it does not publish numerical selection weights or an interview scoring rubric.

Admission requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, hold a bachelor's degree by matriculation, demonstrate spoken and written English proficiency, complete the prerequisite courses and take the MCAT. Coursework generally must come from a regionally accredited U.S. or Canadian institution; applicants with a foreign bachelor's degree are considered case by case but must complete prerequisites in the United States or Canada. FIU academic requirements

Required preparation is two semesters each of biology with lab, general chemistry with lab, organic chemistry with lab, physics with lab, college mathematics or statistics, and writing-intensive coursework. Organic chemistry may be fulfilled through Organic Chemistry I and II or Organic Chemistry I plus biochemistry. AP and IB credit may satisfy specified subjects when recorded on the transcript and verified by AMCAS. CLEP is not accepted. Online prerequisites are case by case, laboratories must be in person, and community-college prerequisites are accepted with advanced graded work strongly recommended. FIU academic requirements

For 2027 entry, only MCAT scores from 2024 or later are accepted. Applicants submit at least three letters through AMCAS: two from science faculty and one from another faculty member who taught them. A health-professions committee letter should include those three letters. Up to three additional letters may be submitted. FIU Medicine FAQ FIU application process

Important dates

The current official dates page lists AMCAS availability in May, submission beginning in June, interviews from August through March, September 30 as the last MCAT date, December 1 as the AMCAS deadline, and January 15 as the secondary, recommendation and supplemental-material deadline. It lists October 15 as the first decision date, with rolling notification approximately one month after interview. FIU dates and deadlines

The same page lists February 19 for Plan to Enroll availability, April 15 for narrowing offers, April 30 for holding one acceptance and Commit to Enroll availability, June 15 as FIU's Commit to Enroll requirement, and July orientation. The page is current alongside the 2026-2027 interview cycle but does not print a calendar year beside these recurring dates. Applicants should confirm the year-specific portal instructions before relying on a deadline. FIU dates and deadlines

How selection works

FIU first receives and screens verified AMCAS applications, then sends a secondary to every verified applicant. Interviews are scheduled only after the file is complete. The secondary uses directed essays to examine interest in medicine and suitability for FIU Medicine. FIU application process

The admissions materials emphasize service and volunteering, meaningful patient contact, personal qualities, academic preparation and fit. Florida residency is preferred, but it is not an exclusive eligibility rule. Decisions are rolling and are normally communicated about one month after interview. The official pages do not publish numerical weights for GPA, MCAT, activities, essays, recommendations or interviews, nor a post-interview formula. Published cohort averages are descriptive and should not be presented as cutoffs.

Interview details

Confirmed

All interviews in the 2026-2027 cycle are virtual. Interview day includes check-in from 1:00-1:15 p.m., an opening session from 1:15-1:40, Interview I from 1:45-2:15, Interview II from 2:30-3:00 and closing from 3:00-3:20. The two interviews are separate, traditional one-on-one conversations. Interviewers receive the applicant's AMCAS and FIU supplemental files and submit an evaluation form. Applicants also receive a virtual information dashboard and may meet students through Virtual Cafecito Hour. FIU application process

Not published

The current official pages do not publish the question set, preparation time, competency map, evaluation rubric, interview weight, assessor-calibration method or final score-combination formula. Use the invitation and applicant portal for any changed logistics.

Who this program may suit

FIU may suit applicants who want a Miami-based medical education and can demonstrate sustained service, meaningful patient contact and readiness to work with diverse communities. Florida residency receives preference, so out-of-state applicants should assess their evidence of fit without treating residency preference as an assurance of admission or a categorical exclusion. The two open-file virtual interviews make clear explanation of experiences, motivation and reflection especially relevant. This is a preparation consideration, not a prediction of selection.

Practice and next step

Start with the featured access-to-care scenario. Record one response that identifies the competing needs, asks for missing clinical and access information, explains a consistent decision rule and communicates respectfully.

Review one observable weakness, such as relying on assumptions, leaving the prioritization rule vague or failing to acknowledge the effect on the person who waits. Record the answer again with one deliberate adjustment and compare both attempts. Continue through the recommended path for structured practice, then use the official interview invitation before simulating exact logistics.
