Admission requirements
Applicants need 90 semester or about 135 quarter hours by June 2027, including at least 30 semester hours at a four-year institution. A bachelor's is common but not required. Total and science GPAs must each be at least 2.85. Prerequisites must be completed with C or higher by June 30, 2027; C-minus and pass/fail or credit/no-credit do not count. FAQ
Required courses are biochemistry 3 semester hours, biology with labs 8, English 6, general chemistry with labs 8, organic chemistry with labs 8 and physics with labs 8. Online accredited work is accepted though in-person is encouraged. Community-college work is accepted but not recommended for prerequisites. AP, IB or CLEP may count when transcripted. Microbiology is recommended for this cycle and becomes required only for the 2027-28 admissions cycle. Prerequisites
The DAT Academic Average minimum is 360. Only tests from 2024, 2025 or 2026 are accepted for Fall 2027. The Canadian DAT is accepted for Canadian applicants. Iowa requires three individual letters or one committee letter, submitted by evaluators through AADSAS; no specific evaluator roles are prescribed.
The regular page publishes no shadowing-hour minimum or research requirement. Foreign coursework requires a U.S. course-by-course evaluation. Applicants who already hold a foreign dental degree must use Iowa's separate Advanced Standing Program, not this route. The reviewed regular pages do not publish a citizenship or visa restriction.
Important dates
ADEA AADSAS opened May 12, 2026 and first accepted submissions June 2. Every application item must be received and verified by September 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET, including DAT, evaluations, transcripts, Iowa fee and attestation; incomplete files are cancelled. Timeline
Interviews begin August 2026 and end November 2026. Decision notification is December 15, 2026. The current timeline says prerequisite courses are due June 30, 2027 and mandatory D1 orientation runs August 16-20, 2027.
The 2026-27 catalog generically says complete AADSAS files by October 1, one day later than the cycle-specific admissions timeline. This packet follows the more specific September 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET deadline. Exact individual interview dates, the virtual-day date, offer-response windows and the current deposit terms for this cycle are not published on the admissions timeline.
How selection works
Iowa uses whole-file review across academics, DAT, evaluations, interview and experiences including dental exposure, work, service, leadership and research where present. Applicants are considered in two separate pools based on Iowa-residency status; the school applies Board of Regents policy for the admissions-residency determination. Application process
Selected candidates must interview to remain under consideration. The committee then reviews quantitative and qualitative components, evaluations, interviews and other application factors. 2026-27 catalog
Iowa does not publish numerical weights, a whole-file scoring formula, interview score anchors, how the two residency pools are compared, committee voting mechanics, a post-interview formula or wait-list ranking.
Interview details
Confirmed
Interviews are invitation-only and required. Approximately 240 candidates participate during August-November 2026. Most interview activity is in person, and Iowa also offers one virtual interview day. The format is one applicant with two interviewers, who may be Admissions Committee members, faculty or staff. The current page says candidates complete two timed interviews with different interviewer pairs, using situational and behavioral questions. Application process
Not published
Iowa does not publish the interview duration, exact dates or virtual-day date, platform, interviewer file access, preparation time, score anchors, numerical interview weight, accommodation process or post-interview committee formula. The page contains a repeated phrase after describing two interviews; this packet does not infer additional encounters from that wording.
Who this program may suit
This page covers the conventional four-year Doctor of Dental Surgery in Iowa City. It excludes Iowa's Advanced Standing Program for internationally trained dentists, DDS/PhD or combined pathways, graduate degrees, specialties and residencies. 2026-27 catalog
The curriculum introduces patient care late in the first year, then uses clerkships and comprehensive care. A useful fit response should connect a concrete experience to patient communication, learning across disciplines and service to a community, while recognizing that residency is an explicit admissions-pool factor.
Practice and next step
Record a situational response about a patient who declines the plan you believe is safest. Ask a reviewer to mark whether you explore the patient's reasons, explain options clearly and protect autonomy. Make one adjustment, record a second attempt and compare empathy, structure and practical judgment.

Recommended preparation
Structured Interview Essentials
Build a repeatable spoken-answer loop across five common structured-interview skills: fair decisions, ethical reasoning, using feedback, teamwork under pressure, and explaining your motivation. Record each response once, choose the weakest one, review one observable weakness, and answer it again with one deliberate adjustment.
