James Madison University PA Admissions Guide (2027)

James Madison University’s 28-month MPAS plans to admit 36 students for Fall 2027. Applicants must submit both the JMU Graduate School and CASPA applications by June 15, 2026, with CASPA verification by July 15. Competitive applicants receive an on-campus interview, and offers are made on a rolling basis. JMU requires the GRE, three references and at least 1,000 direct-patient-contact hours; a graduate degree waives the GRE.

Admission requirements

Applicants must submit both a JMU Graduate School application and a CASPA application. A bachelor’s degree is required by the program start, and three recommendations must be submitted through CASPA. JMU describes a 3.0 overall GPA as preferred rather than a hard minimum; successful applicants typically exceed it.

The GRE is required and must be sent to both CASPA and the Graduate School. JMU publishes no minimum score, but treats a score below the 25th percentile in any section as a red flag. Applicants who have completed a graduate degree receive a GRE waiver.

Prerequisites are anatomy with lab and physiology, each with a B or higher, plus biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and transcripted medical terminology, each with a C or higher. Most science prerequisites must be within seven years of matriculation; medical terminology does not expire. All prerequisites require letter grades and must be complete before the Fall 2027 start. JMU also requires at least 1,000 hours of direct patient contact by matriculation. Shadowing and several non-direct roles do not count, so applicants should use JMU’s role-specific table. Important dates

  • April 30, 2026: anticipated application-cycle opening
  • June 15, 2026: both CASPA and JMU Graduate School applications due; CASPA must be complete
  • July 15, 2026: CASPA verification deadline

  • Two weeks after an offer: commitment response and $1,000 non-refundable deposit due

JMU reviews applications and makes offers on a rolling basis, so completing both applications early preserves more of the cycle. Official Fall 2027 application timeline

How selection works

The Graduate School first evaluates graduate admission, and the PA Program separately reviews candidates who satisfy its requirements. Written applications determine interview invitations. JMU evaluates academic preparation; speaking, reading and writing; professionalism, ethics and empathy; critical thinking and adaptability; the quantity and quality of direct patient care; and fit with a mission emphasizing altruism, service, underserved populations and leadership.

A selected group completes an on-campus interview. Candidates are ranked after interview, with rolling offers to top-ranked applicants and possible wait-list placement. After all interviews, the committee reviews the wait list; only when the six main factors are equal may it consider its approximate two-thirds Virginia and one-third out-of-state balance. Interview details

Confirmed

Competitive applicants who complete both required applications may be invited to an on-campus interview during Summer or Fall 2026. The interview contributes to post-interview ranking and rolling offers. JMU’s selection factors indicate that candidates must demonstrate communication, motivation to become a PA, ethical behaviour, empathy, self-awareness, confidence, problem-solving, judgment, adaptability, healthcare insight, service and leadership. JMU does not publish exact interview dates, interview length, number of interviewers, question count, station format, file-access policy, assessed group activities or criterion weights. Do not assume an MMI, panel or closed-file format.

Who this program may suit

JMU may suit applicants who want a small, full-time campus program and already have substantial hands-on patient experience. Its selection framework explicitly values rigorous recent science work, communication, ethics, empathy, adaptability, service to vulnerable or underserved communities and leadership.

The 28-month lock-step program includes a 12-month clinical phase. JMU says most rotations are in Virginia, but students must be able to travel or relocate and do not choose their sites or sequence. Applicants should weigh that operating requirement alongside fit with the program’s service mission. JMU selection factors · JMU program structure

Practice and next step

Record: Answer the featured “Why the physician assistant profession?” prompt aloud. Use one specific patient-care experience, explain what it taught you about the PA role and connect that evidence to the work you want to do.

Review: Check whether your answer distinguishes the PA profession from adjacent careers, shows insight from direct care and avoids generic claims. Mark one weakness in specificity, reasoning or delivery.

Second attempt: Record the answer again with one deliberate adjustment, then compare both versions. Continue with the Physician Assistant Interview Essentials path to practise ethics, empathy, adaptability, leadership and JMU program-fit answers.
