Admission requirements

Applicants need at least 60 credits of full-time postsecondary education from a recognized university or college offering university-equivalent courses. A bachelor's degree is not required. The minimum overall GPA is 2.80; LIU says preference goes to applicants who completed a bachelor's degree with overall and prerequisite GPAs above 3.20. Requirements

The 26 prerequisite credits are two biology or zoology courses, general chemistry with lab, organic chemistry with lab, biochemistry, genetics, statistics or calculus and English composition. Each requires C or better. Except for math and English, prerequisites normally must have been taken within the previous six years. Up to two may be in progress at application and must finish in fall or spring before the programme starts. Transcripted equivalent AP credit is accepted.

Three references support the review of animal, veterinary and research experience. Every applicant must complete Casper by September 15, 2026. The GRE is not required, but LIU's current FAQ says optional GRE General scores may be submitted and considered; do not describe the GRE as ignored. International transcripts require WES evaluation, and applicants whose prior academic programme was not taught in English must meet one of LIU's published English-proficiency routes.

Important dates

For the 2026–27 application cycle, VMCAS opened January 21, 2026, submissions opened May 6 and the final application deadline is September 15, 2026. Casper has the same deadline. LIU has no separate supplemental application. Current cycle FAQ

Online MMIs are held from December through January. Rolling offers begin in February. Offers made before April must be accepted around the national mid-April date specified in the offer; a $500 deposit secures the place. The wait list may remain active until the programme begins near the end of August 2027.

The current pages do not publish exact interview dates, an exact universal offer-acceptance date beyond the national cycle, the orientation date or the Fall 2027 first day of classes.

How selection works

Academic factors account for 50% of LIU's overall evaluation and include overall undergraduate GPA, science GPA and prerequisite GPA. Nonacademic factors account for the other 50% and include written communication in statements and essays, animal, veterinary and research experiences, three references, personal and professional qualities demonstrated through Casper and the invitation-only MMI. Only VMCAS-verified applications are reviewed. Applicants are responsible for completeness because LIU does not send incomplete-file notices. Top-ranked applicants are invited to interview, and offers then roll from February. The current pages do not publish separate New York and nonresident admissions pools, fixed residency preference, the relative weight of Casper versus the MMI inside the 50% nonacademic score or the post-interview calculation.

LIU's college-specific pages continue to describe AVMA COE Provisional Accreditation granted April 16, 2020. Its central university accreditation table lists the DVM renewal/status date as TBD. Preserve the specific published status and flag the administrative-table mismatch rather than inferring full accreditation.
