Admission requirements

Applicants need an overall GPA of at least 3.00 and must maintain it through matriculation. No more than three science/math prerequisites may lack grades at application. Required courses need C- or better, and all must be complete by the end of spring 2027; May-mester or summer 2027 completion is not accepted. Prerequisites include writing; 15 hours of humanities/social-behavioural science/fine arts; mathematics; biology I and II with labs; microbiology with lab; chemistry I and II with labs; organic chemistry I and II with labs; upper-level biochemistry; physics I and II; and six upper-level science/math hours. A completed bachelor's before application waives writing and the 15-hour general-education group, but a bachelor's is not itself stated as mandatory. Accredited online courses are accepted. MSU CVM requires VMCAS, its supplemental questions/course evaluation and a non-refundable $60 processing fee. Three VMCAS recommendations are reviewed; at least one must be from a licensed veterinarian listed in the applicant's experience section. The AAVMC 2027 guide sets the VMCAS application and material deadline at September 15, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. Mississippi State recommends submitting about a month early for verification. Interview notifications are sent from mid-December through early January, and interviews usually occur from late January through mid-February. Decisions are sent by late February. How selection works

Mississippi State publishes four components. Academic assessment is 30%, with 70% of that score from prerequisite GPA and 30% from overall GPA. Nonacademic assessment is 30% and examines understanding of the profession, integrity, communication, empathy, service orientation, motivation, work ethic, interpersonal and problem-solving skills, leadership and other distinctive qualities across essays, letters and experiences. The top combined academic and nonacademic scores in each pool advance to interview. The three pools are Mississippi residents, West Virginia contract residents and at-large nonresidents. The college publishes an approximate class distribution of 50–55 Mississippi residents, seven West Virginia contract students and 50–55 nonresidents in a class of 116–118. The interview contributes 30% of selection. Mississippi State uses a traditional interview lasting about 30 minutes with a 2–3 person panel. A typical panel includes one Admissions Committee member, one CVM faculty member and one practitioner. The committee member has the applicant's file; the other panelists receive only basic demographics such as name, home state and primary college. Current selection process

Interview invitations are issued by January, with interviews normally held from late January to mid-February. The current selection page says all residency pools use this interview stage. Its nonacademic criteria identify communication, integrity, empathy, service, motivation, interpersonal skill, problem solving and leadership as qualities the college values.

The current Fall 2027 pages do not state the interview modality or location, exact dates, number of questions, prompts, preparation time, whether questions are standardized, scoring scale, accommodations process or how the 30% interview score is calculated. A February 2026 article documents an in-person prior-cycle Interview Week and three-person panels, but it is not proof of Fall 2027 modality.
