Admission requirements

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, an MCAT of at least 494, the required prerequisites and a qualifying residency status. The 2027 MCAT window is 2023–2026, with September 12, 2026 as the last accepted test. Prerequisites are one academic year each of human-based biology with lab, general chemistry with lab, organic chemistry with lab and general physics without a lab requirement, plus one semester or two quarters of biochemistry. Courses require C or better. Organic chemistry labs and biochemistry may remain outstanding at application but must be complete before matriculation; degrees and all prerequisites must be complete by June 30 of the matriculation year. Applicants with a foreign bachelor's degree must complete 60 semester hours at a regionally accredited U.S. institution, including 30 upper-division hours. After summer 2023, at most two required lecture courses may be online, and online laboratories are not accepted. Prerequisites

Applicants submit three to four letters through AMCAS. UNM suggests letters from a clinician, a research or project supervisor and faculty; letters are due by the interview date or December 1, whichever comes first. Regular and BA/MD AMCAS applications are accepted from the end of May through November 2, with decisions sent by March 15. How selection works

UNM first screens the secondary for residency eligibility, minimum GPA, minimum MCAT and prerequisites. The school sends the secondary to primary applicants; completing it does not guarantee an interview. How to apply

Eligibility is unusually narrow. Applicants must be New Mexico residents for at least six months at application or meet a published strong-ties rule, such as qualifying New Mexico education, financial dependence on a New Mexico resident or residence or high-school graduation in a listed border county. Enrolled members of a federally recognized U.S. tribal nation and active-duty military members stationed in New Mexico also receive consideration. WICHE consideration is limited to Montana and Wyoming residents and requires Early Decision. DACA and foreign-national applicants must still meet a listed residency criterion; foreign nationals must live in New Mexico for at least six months before applying. Residency requirements

Interviewers do not see MCAT scores, academic history or GPA beforehand. Interviews focus on noncognitive evidence including clinical and research experiences, volunteerism, recommendations and the personal statement. Who this program may suit

UNM's regular MD is designed around the health needs of New Mexico. A credible application should demonstrate direct patient contact, knowledge of the state's health challenges and a concrete connection to the communities the school is charged to serve. Clinical experience
