Admission requirements

Applicants need at least 90 semester credits at an accredited college or university. Required courses are 12 credits each of Spanish and English; eight each of biology or zoology, physics, general chemistry and organic chemistry; and six in social or behavioural sciences. Science courses must include theory and laboratory, prerequisites require grades of A, B or C, and pass/no-pass does not count except the brochure's limited language-credit provisions. Applicants must be proficient reading, writing and speaking both Spanish and English, although courses may be taught in either language. Up to six of the 12 required credits in each language may come from transcripted CLEP or AP; qualifying advanced, honours or literature courses may also satisfy stated language-credit substitutions.

The DAT is required by the application deadline and is valid for three years. Applications below 360 SNS, 320 RCT or 340 PAT on the current scale are not considered. UPR describes 400 SNS, 360 RCT and 390 PAT as competitive reference points, not additional eligibility floors. The school recommends an academic average of 3.0 for competitiveness but publishes no GPA cutoff beyond C or higher in every prerequisite.

How selection works

UPR evaluates four articulated criteria: academic performance, DAT scores, personal characteristics and completed science coursework. Academic review includes GPA, prerequisite grades, repetitions, withdrawals, low grades and failures. After initial screening, the Admissions Committee selects applicants for a personal interview; applicants also submit a portfolio electronically when requested. UPR gives preference to Puerto Rico residents and limits nonresident capacity, while considering only fully bilingual candidates.
