Admission requirements
Floyd has no required prerequisite courses. It strongly recommends preparation in general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry, along with social-science coursework and advanced biological, physical or chemical sciences such as physics, histology, genetics and molecular biology. Courses do not expire. The school prefers applicants who will have a bachelor's degree at enrollment but may occasionally admit an applicant with at least 90 semester hours of outstanding undergraduate work. Admissions FAQ
The MCAT is required. Floyd says it should be taken no earlier than four years before application and no later than September of the application year; for Fall 2027, September 12, 2026 is the final accepted administration. The committee considers the highest composite score and also reviews all scores and trends. No minimum GPA or MCAT is published for interview consideration. Accredited online courses and community or technical college credits are accepted, although traditional classroom work is described as more competitive. Admissions Admissions FAQ
Applicants submit three individual letters or a committee evaluation through AMCAS; two science-faculty letters are highly recommended, and the school considers at most five letters. Floyd expects meaningful health-care experience, such as clinical volunteering, shadowing, scribing, EMT or CNA work, but does not require a fixed number of hours. Virtual shadowing is accepted, though in-person experience is preferred. Application Admissions FAQ
Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents may apply. The state-assisted school gives primary consideration to South Carolina residents but accepts out-of-state applicants. South Carolina residency is determined by the university Residency Office, not by the medical school. Admissions

How selection works
Floyd reviews AMCAS and a school-specific secondary. The committee evaluates academic persistence and competitiveness through undergraduate, postbaccalaureate and graduate GPA plus MCAT, and evaluates motivation, maturity, integrity, sensitivity, interpersonal skills, warmth, intellectual curiosity, stress tolerance, medically related experience and the basis for pursuing medicine. Health-care exposure is expected, but there is no published hour minimum. Interview day Admissions FAQ
Interview invitations and regular decisions are rolling. The current sources publish no formula for initial screening, numerical component weights, interview rubric, interviewer file-access rule or committee voting threshold.

Who this program may suit
Floyd gives primary consideration to South Carolina residents and expects meaningful health-care exposure. Applicants should be ready to explain what they learned from direct observation or service and how it informed their decision for medicine. The interview domains also make integrity, maturity, interpersonal skill and response to stress useful evidence areas. Admissions FAQ Interview day
Floyd Columbia is an independently accredited MD program with its own application and Admissions Committee. Do not merge it with the separately accredited USC School of Medicine Greenville. Florence is a regional clinical campus within the Floyd MD program, not a separate first-year admissions page. Accreditation MD program
Practice and next step
Record a 90-second response about a health-care experience that clarified the realities of practising medicine. Explain what you observed, what you did and how it changed your judgment. Review the recording for a vague trait label and adjust it to a concrete decision and result. Then prepare a separate example of integrity or working through stress.

Structured Interview Essentials
Build a repeatable spoken-answer loop across five common structured-interview skills: fair decisions, ethical reasoning, using feedback, teamwork under pressure, and explaining your motivation. Record each response once, choose the weakest one, review one observable weakness, and answer it again with one deliberate adjustment.
