Admission requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and either South Dakota residents or non-residents with a published strong tie. Strong ties are graduating from a South Dakota high school, completing at least 90 credits at a South Dakota college or university, having a parent living in South Dakota, being the child of a Sanford School of Medicine alumnus, or being an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe from a bordering state. At least 64 semester credits are required for admissions-committee consideration and at least 90 before matriculation. To be offered an interview, applicants ordinarily need a cumulative GPA of at least 3.1 and a composite MCAT of at least 496. An applicant below 3.1 may receive individual consideration with an MCAT of at least 496 and significant recent coursework showing stronger performance. The MCAT must be within three years of the November 1 application deadline and taken no later than November 1, 2026 for Fall 2027 entry. Academic criteria

Required semesters, with laboratory experience where available, are two biology, two general or inorganic chemistry, one organic chemistry, one biochemistry, two physics, one mathematics and one statistics. A second organic chemistry semester plus genetics, microbiology, physiology, psychology and sociology are recommended, not required. Coursework

Applicants submit three individual recommendations or a structured premedical committee packet with at least three contributors through AMCAS; no more than five recommendations should be sent. Applicants who pass the preliminary screen receive an invitation to submit the online supplemental, recommendation requests and a non-refundable $35 fee. Sanford's current annual rule allows AMCAS submission between June 1 and November 1 in the year before entry, making the Fall 2027 window June 1-November 1, 2026. Applicants who pass are invited to the supplemental stage; completed primary and supplemental materials then determine interview invitation. It requires the Sanford AMCAS designation and separate tribal-status verification; it is not a duplicate school page.
