Admission requirements

UNC encourages a residential four-year BA or BS. Applicants not pursuing a degree need at least three years of accredited coursework totaling 96 semester or 144 quarter hours. No more than 64 semester hours may come from an accredited community, technical or online institution, and remaining work must be at an accredited residential four-year institution. Current 2026-27 catalogue

Prerequisites are eight semester hours of biology in two courses with labs, with one lab including dissection and one course in human anatomy or vertebrate zoology; eight of general chemistry with labs; six of organic chemistry across two courses, with no lab required; three of biochemistry; eight across two college-level physics courses; and six of English or composition. Courses must be complete before admission and transferable to UNC when taken elsewhere.

The DAT is required before the application is considered and cannot be more than three years old. UNC publishes no numerical GPA or DAT minimum. Shadowing is important, particularly multiple longitudinal experiences in general dentistry, but no hour minimum is set. The current catalogue does not cleanly publish a regular-DDS letter contract, citizenship restriction or international-course rule; do not infer one from ASPID or other programmes.

Applicants submit ADEA AADSAS by November 1, 2026 and UNC's supplemental by November 15, 2026 for the following entering class. The supplemental includes a form, fee, DAT results, a 2-by-2 photo and, for applicants claiming in-state status, a North Carolina Residency Determination Service application. ADEA AADSAS opened May 12, 2026, accepted first submissions June 2 and closes February 5, 2027, but UNC's earlier November deadline governs its application. ADEA AADSAS dates Offers begin according to ADEA's December 15 notification date and continue until the class is full. UNC does not publish the Fall 2027 interview window, supplemental fee amount or exact matriculation date in the current source reviewed.

How selection works

UNC considers the applicant's academic record, motivation for dentistry, activities, DAT results and personal interviews.
