Admission requirements

Applicants need at least 90 semester or 134 quarter hours from a regionally accredited U.S. or Canadian institution. A bachelor's degree is highly desirable but not mandatory for an exceptional applicant. Prerequisites, completed before enrollment with C or higher, are 14 semester hours of biology including 12 lecture, two laboratory and at least three microbiology hours; eight each of general chemistry, organic chemistry and physics with laboratory; three additional biochemistry; six English; and three statistics taught in a mathematics or statistics department. Pass/fail does not satisfy prerequisites. AP credit is accepted only when the transcript identifies a course and credit hours. Graduate courses do not satisfy the 90-hour total or prerequisites. The school requires the DAT and recognizes the current 200-600 scale, but publishes no minimum, score-age limit or final test date. The application includes either a health-professions advisory evaluation or two academic-professor evaluations, plus a separate letter from a practising dentist.

The current catalogue says applicants may use TMDSAS or ADEA AADSAS, with TMDSAS preferred and required for Texas residents. It also requires a photograph. Current TMDSAS eligibility guidance lists UTHealth Houston Dentistry among the Texas dental schools that consider only U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The current school catalogue defines an annual May 1-October 1 application period but does not publish separate 2027 interview, decision or matriculation dates. After April 15, 2027, a Texas dental school may not offer a seat to an applicant holding another dental-school seat.

How selection works

The Admissions Committee includes faculty and student members with ex officio participation. It compares academic and personal qualities through collective judgment. Initial academic review considers overall and science GPAs, academic progression or regression, total credit hours and DAT performance in natural sciences, reading comprehension and perceptual ability.
