Admission requirements

Applicants must document at least 90 semester hours—three years—at a U.S. or Canadian college or university by application. Required coursework is six hours English composition and rhetoric; eight each of biology or zoology, general or inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physics with laboratory; three anatomy; and three biochemistry. All prerequisites are due June 1 before entry. Science pass/fail or satisfactory grades are not accepted; up to 64 community-college hours may count, and AP is accepted for English. WVU publishes no GPA cutoff. The DAT is required by November 1, scores are valid for three years and the committee will not review a file without results. The current page supersedes a FAQ that says five years. Applicants submit a committee or comprehensive letter when available; otherwise they submit two letters from science professors who taught and graded them plus two letters of their choice.

Dental shadowing in clinical settings is required, although there is no numerical floor; successful applicants typically have at least 100 hours across varied settings. The current source does not publish citizenship or visa eligibility.

ADEA AADSAS opened May 12, 2026 and accepted first submissions June 2. WVU's complete AADSAS application and official DAT are due November 1, 2026. How selection works

WVU describes five central parameters: academic achievement, DAT scores, recommendations, dental shadowing and broader life, career and volunteer experience, and the personal interview. It also considers course rigor, upper-level science, academic improvement, manual dexterity, service, leadership, research and knowledge of dentistry. Current DDS application

West Virginia residents receive preference; selected nonresidents are also interviewed. The committee includes faculty across dental disciplines, students and alumni. WVU does not publish quantitative factor weights, academic-screen formulas, interview score or weight, committee voting rules or wait-list ordering.
