Admission requirements

Applicants must complete at least 90 undergraduate or graduate credits at an accredited U.S. or Canadian institution and at least three years of higher education or employment after high school before matriculation. WVU does not require named prerequisite courses. Applicants instead demonstrate scientific, interpersonal, intrapersonal and communication competencies through coursework, MCAT performance, research, employment, military learning, self-study, letters and the interview. The school expects strong patient-care experience, including MD shadowing, plus evidence of leadership or teaching, research and service. The MCAT is required. Regular-decision scores from September 2023 through September 2026 are eligible. All scores are reviewed; the most recent total and subsection scores are reported to the committee. The current regular-decision page does not publish a minimum MCAT. The 506 threshold belongs only to Early Decision.

Applicants submit one letter of their choice or an undergraduate committee letter through AMCAS. The letter should address AAMC competencies and should be uploaded at least two weeks before interview. WVU says additional letters do not increase competitiveness. All AMCAS-verified applicants may complete a secondary, but applicants taking the MCAT in this cycle should wait for their newest score before submitting it. International and DACA applicants may apply, but WVU does not accept international coursework. International applicants should confirm visa and financial requirements directly with WVU Global Affairs. Important dates

AMCAS opens for submission May 28, 2026, and WVU begins receiving processed applications June 30. The regular AMCAS deadline is November 1 and the secondary deadline is December 1, both at 11:59 p.m. Timeline

Interviewing begins in September 2026. The current interview page says virtual interviews run through March 2027, while the general timeline says interviews conclude in February. Applicants should treat their invitation as controlling. Rolling admission notifications begin in October. Wait-listed applicants may be considered May through July and until the academic year begins. The MD Commit to Enroll date is May 31, 2027.

The current official pages do not publish the Fall 2027 orientation date, first day of class or an exact date for each rolling decision. Early Decision and MD/PhD deadlines are separate and should not be used for regular MD planning.

How selection works

The Committee on Admissions uses holistic, competency-based review and looks for evidence that applicants can fulfill the school's mission to improve health and well-being. Qualified West Virginia residents receive preference. Nonresidents are considered, with preference for ties to West Virginia or WVU and for rural or Appalachian connections. Committee members review files, conduct interviews and present interviewed applicants' academic qualifications, recommendations and interview impressions. The committee then votes, and applicants are reported as accepted, wait-listed or rejected.
